  Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Metroparks of the Toledo Area!
Prior to volunteering, all new volunteers are are encouraged to attend this orientation which enables the Volunteer Services staff to meet prospective volunteers, learn more about their interests,review park policies and procedures, and provide an overview of Metropark volunteer opportunities.

Orientations are held the first Tuesday and Thrusday of most months. [VMT]

 
4/7/17 Volunteer Training: Side Cut Park Highlights 9:30 AM Side Cut Waiting List
  Park specific natural and cultural history, interpretation, and volunteerism are the focus of this outdoor training that features a different Metropark each month. Open to all interested adults and recommended for Metroparks Volunteers.(VMT)  
4/7/17 Preschool Pioneers: Building Time (3 to 5 year olds) 10:00 AM Pearson Registration Closed
  Bring your 3 to 5 year old to the cabin in the big swamp for a fun history lesson. Discover the importance of construction skills from our ancestors. Hear a story and compare and contrast tools and supplies needed to build things. Children will build their own model wood cabin to take home. register child only. Adult must accompany child.

  Exhibits from the nation’s premier nature photographers hang alongside images by local talent in this gallery. The National Center for Nature Photography at Secor Metropark is the only center of its kind in the country. Gallery open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  Take a brisk walk on park trails to increase your heart rate and get the blood flowing. This is a 50 min walk and covers over 2 miles at a quick walking pace. There will be no walk on federal holidays.

  We begin our tea season with an homage to that ever-present accessory—the handbag—vintage and new--along with accessories and “couture”. Who doesn’t love Ladies Fashion! Our Manor House has already seen eight decades of it!

Fun “Dressing for the Day” suggestion---wear something polka-dot! (Colors—bright multi-colors)

4/7/17 Campfire Cooking: Variations for Backpacking 5:30 PM Oak Openings Preserve Registration Closed
  Fill up on hearty recipes for your next backpacking adventure. Learn to cook delicious trail meals over a camp stove and small fire. Recipes include chicken tortellini soup and foil dough boys for dessert. Bring a reusable plate, utensils and cup, and please dress for the weather.  
4/8/17 Ohio Boating Education Course, OBEC 8:00 AM Wildwood Preserve Registration Closed
  What is OBEC? OBEC is Ohio's official boating education course. This standardized 8-hour course is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and is offered throughout Ohio to supplement other boating education opportunities.

Course content focuses on Ohio and Federal boating laws including equipment requirements, operating laws, rules of the road, and buoy systems, plus topics of risk management, basic safety practices, and survival in emergencies.

Bring a lunch. We will take a 30 minute break.

  Join us in our reforestation efforts at Fallen Timbers Battlefield. We need help trimming roots and prepping thousands of bare root trees for planting. Volunteers must be 18+. Be sure to dress for the weather. Please wear only closed toed shoes to protect your feet!

4/8/17 Singletrack Bike Trail Work Day 9:00 AM Oak Openings Preserve Registration Closed
  A singletrack bike trail is on its way to being completed! This trail is being built at Oak Openings Preserve with the help of volunteers. An estimated 1,000 hours of volunteer time will be needed to construct this trail. Wear long pants, bug spray and sunblock. Bring your gloves, a water bottle and an attitude to get it done. Ages 14+

4/8/17 Calling all Girl Scouts: Digital Photography (Juniors) 2:00 PM Secor Registration Closed
  Click, Click! Do you know how to get the most out of your digital device and what it takes to capture a winning photo? Girls will get the chance to use a Metroparks digital camera to explore the ins-and-outs of the camera and fulfill the requirements for the digital camera badge. Scouts must provide their own SD card to take their photos home.  
4/8/17 “Owl: A Year in the Lives of North American Owls”: Toledo Naturalists and Metroparks Natural History Series 7:00 PM Wildwood Preserve Registration Closed
  Award winning photographer, Paul Bannick, will be presenting a program with video, sound, and amazing stories from the field where he followed owls through the course of one year in their distinct habitats. He has captured rare images of courtship, mating, nesting in spring, as well as fledging and feeding of young. He continued his study of owls thru their dispersal in fall, and finally, winter’s migrations.
All 19 species of owls found in Canada and United States are featured in his new book Owl: A Year in the Lives of North American Owls. Paul will be signing and selling this latest book after his presentation.

  Prepare for adventure as we maneuver twists, turns, portages and serious log jams while viewing the incredible scenery and wildlife of the Ottawa River with a Metroparks Naturalist. Boats and padding gear provided. Dress to get wet. Participants must be 12 years or older and all minors must be accompanied by an adult. Register all participants. This is an intermediate difficulty paddle. Skill level required: Beginner: Endurance required: Intermediate.

  Metroparks is seeking interested individuals to participate in a new volunteer program. Water Quality Monitors will assist staff in the use of biological monitoring to determine the water quality of streams and rivers in and near Metroparks. 4/12/17 Active Adult Walking Group : 55+ Seniors 2:00 PM Wildwood Preserve Registration Closed
  Stay active in the outdoors! This is a walking group for 55 and older, however any age is welcome. It's important to stay active at all ages and equally important to spend time in nature. Come move, learn, and socialize as we take a slow stroll around Wildwood Metropark on paved or gravel trails.
