  Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Metroparks of the Toledo Area!
Prior to volunteering, all new volunteers are are encouraged to attend this orientation which enables the Volunteer Services staff to meet prospective volunteers, learn more about their interests,review park policies and procedures, and provide an overview of Metropark volunteer opportunities.

Orientations are held the first Tuesday of most months. [VMT]

  Do early winter sunset times have you lamenting the loss of your after work walk in the park? Enjoy an invigorating evening hike through your parks with a naturalist when the parks are usually closed. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended, dress for the weather

  This outdoor, multi-sensory nature play and exploration introduces your toddlers up to three years old to the natural world and promotes its preservation. Parents accompany and assist in their child's experience at the program. Register toddlers only.  
3/7/18 Good Health Walks 11:00 AM Wildwood Preserve No Registration Required
  Take a brisk walk on park trails to increase your heart rate and get the blood flowing. This is a 50 min walk and covers over 2 miles at a quick walking pace. There will be no walk on federal holidays.  
3/7/18 Get to Know Your Trails 1:00 PM Swan Creek Preserve Register
  Get outside yourself and get on the trails with a park naturalist. We will look at the flora and fauna of northwest Ohio as we explore a new trail each month. This is a great way to experience our beautiful Metroparks and all they have to offer us. Please wear sturdy shoes and dress according to weather.

  The Friends of Pearson always welcome fellow fans of the park to help plan events and volunteer activities. These meetings are the best way to learn how to support the popular Oregon Metropark.  
3/8/18 Wake Up With the Birds 8:00 AM Wildwood Preserve Register
  Make Thursday morning your bird watching time! Bring your favorite morning beverage and join us in Wildwood's Window on Wildlife for this informal viewing and interpretation of our feathered friends. At 8:30, we may venture out to take a quick look in nearby trees and meadows (optional). No birding experience necessary.

  Park adventures for our youngest visitors. Preschoolers, toddler and their guardians enjoy story time, a nature walk and a craft to take home. There is a different theme each session. Please dress for the weather.

  Exhibits from the nation's premier nature photographers hang along side images by local talent in this gallery. The National center for Nature Photography at Secor Metropark is the only center of its kind in the country. Regular Gallery hours are Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  Bring your 3 to 5 year old to the little cabin in the big swamp to learn one of history's fun activities. Children will hear the story of how maple sugar is created and make a fun, snowy dessert once enjoyed by pioneer families. Register child only. Parent must accompany their child at the program.

  Experience the excitement of real night life! Turn off the electronics and tune in the senses to get in touch with your nocturnal side. All Scouts will receive a Metroparks patch for participating.  
3/10/18 Winter Gardening Series: Conifers and Evergreens & Square Foot Gardening 9:00 AM Toledo Botanical Garden Register
  Conifers are the ultimate garden plant. They can provide color, texture, wildlife sanctuary and climate modification in all four seasons. Choosing, using and maintaining the best conifer and evergreen trees and shrubs for your landscape requires some planning and research, that once done, will reward the gardener with decades of beauty. Presented by: Mary Visco, TBG Horticultural Technician.
Square Foot Gardening Workshop Do you long to have fresh quality produce for you and your family but think you don't have time with the many demands in your life? Come and explore the concepts of growing your own food organically through the square foot gardening method. Learn how to turn a small part of your yard into a garden full of fresh, healthy produce. Presented by: Sister Rita Wienken, Urban Farmer and Facilities Coordinator for Toledo GROWs.

  Put your orienteering skills to the test on our advanced orienteering course. A brief introduction to the course and navigation is included. Dress for the weather and wear footwear appropriate for off-trail and uneven ground.

  What's that smell? It's not a skunk, it's skunk cabbage! Did you know that skunk cabbage is one of the first wildflowers to emerge in the spring? Come learn about this very interesting plant, where it can be found in the Metroparks and the animals that depend on it. Wear sturdy shoes and dress accordingly for the weather.

  Enjoy a free guided tour of this over 30,000 square foot, Depression-era home and learn about the region's rich history or walk through the first floor in your own time. After touring the Manor House, save time to walk through the Ellen Biddle Shipman Gardens or walk the trails through the spectacular grounds of Wildwood Preserve.  
3/11/18 Adult Learning Series: Secor Park Supervisor Steve Stockford 2:00 PM Fallen Timbers Battlefield Register
  Creating your own Window on Wildlife. We will be discussing design, feeder placement, seed/feed options, water features, plant selections and what birds you may attract. Enrich your knowledge of the natural and cultural history of our region through this weekly lecture series featuring an indoor presentation followed by an optional, short naturalist led hike. The March 25th session will be held at Farnsworth Roche De Boeuf Shelter.

  Come brave the weather and add some survival skills to your tool belt! You will have the opportunity to build a sturdy and warm shelter, learn about different signaling methods and master the art of fire building with a variety of ignition methods. Please dress for the outdoors.

  Come out and enjoy an educational walk at the Toledo Botanical Garden (TBG). This monthly walk will highlight plants throughout the garden and include their seasonal interests-flowers, fruits, bark and more! It will be a great time to check out plants that you may want to consider for your own landscape. (Second Monday of the month, except for June)

3/14/18 Safety! Don't Leave Shore Without It: Paddlers Safety Class 5:30 PM Wildwood Preserve Register
  Prepare for the paddling season by learning about the safety considerations that all paddlers face and how to plan for a successful and safe trip. Topics covered will include equipment, navigation and the effects of wind, water and waves on paddlers. Learn local paddling locations for different skill levels and DIY ideas for safety gear for kayaks and canoes.
