6/3/17 Trail Challenge 10:00 AM Metroparks of the Toledo Area Registration Closed
  Help us celebrate National Trail Day by signing up to take the Trail Challenge. Set your goal of 50, 100 or 150 miles and create your plan to accomplish your goal and hike! To participate: register online or mail in your registration form with your entry fee. You will receive a t-shirt, entry into the Trail Challenge FaceBook group and invitations to special trail hikes. Your reward will be a hiking stick with the badge of the miles you completed 50, 100 or 150. The form is for you to track your mileage. You can drop off or mail your completed form to Wildwood Preserve Visitors Center by June 30, 2018. You will then be notified when rewards are available for pick-up.

Metroparks encourages you to set a stretch goal, a GET OUTSIDE YOURSELF kind of goal. For some, that will be accomplishing the 50 miles for others the 100 or 150. Watch for Metroparks Featured Trails. Try a trail in a Metropark you've not previously visited. When registering online enter your Mile Goal into the 'Age of Children' text field.

 
1/1/18 Snowshoe Pop-Up Programs: Ages 5+ 12:00 PM Off-Site Registration Closed
  When the snow falls get outside and escape on a snowshoe hike through the winter wonderland of your Metroparks. Snowshoe pop-up programs will be posted on short notice when the snow conditions are right.

Register here to get your email on our email list; this does NOT register you for a snowshoe program. When it snows and a pop-up snowshoe program is scheduled you will receive an email alert; you must register for each pop-up program individually. There are no snowshoe programs pre-scheduled for January, February, or March; registering for these dates simply puts your email on the email list to be alerted when a pop-up program is scheduled.

  Make Thursday morning your bird watching time! Bring your favorite morning beverage and join us in Wildwood's Window on Wildlife for this informal viewing and interpretation of our feathered friends. At 8:30, we may venture out to take a quick look in nearby trees and meadows (optional). No birding experience necessary.  
2/1/18 Calling All Scouts: Boy Scouts Weather Merit Badge 6:00 PM Swan Creek Preserve Registration Closed
  Ever wondered where the wind comes from, how hail forms or if all clouds are the same? Scouts will find the answers to these questions and more, including rules to keep them safe in dangerous weather. Registration includes two sessions on 1/18/18 and 2/1/18. Sign up for the first session only.  
2/2/18 Groundhog Day 10:00 AM Wildwood Preserve Registration Closed
  Is spring around the corner? Or will we have six more weeks of winter? Come join us at Wildwood Preserve and explore this magnificent mammal and the legend surrounding it. There will be a groundhog walk, crafts, stories, games and FUN! Hot cocoa and light refreshments will be served.

  Exhibits from the nation's premier nature photographers hang along side images by local talent in this gallery. The National center for Nature Photography at Secor Metropark is the only center of its kind in the country. Regular Gallery hours are Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  Take a brisk walk on park trails to increase your heart rate and get the blood flowing. This is a 50 min walk and covers over 2 miles at a quick walking pace. There will be no walk on federal holidays.

2/3/18 Forum on Local Natural History and Research 9:30 AM Off-Site Waiting List
  Metroparks is proud to partner with the Library to present this update at the McMaster Center on natural history and recent research of northwest Ohio's rich natural communities, such as the Oak Openings, Maumee River, and Lake Erie marshlands. Enjoy presentations, posters and dialogue about plants, mammals, birds, amphibians, insects, ecology, water quality, geology and more! This year, Metroparks welcomes keynote, Stanley D. Gehrt, Professor of Wildlife Ecology at The Ohio State University, who will present “Ghost dogs: Living with urban coyotes.” Parking garage opens at 9:00 a.m., presentations begin at 9:45 a.m. and the keynote is just before lunch. Program fee includes materials, lunch, courtesy parking at the Library's garage on Adams St. and refreshments. For more information, call 419-407-9701. For vegetarian lunch option, please make note at time of reservation. Reservations required.

2/4/18 Adult Learning Series: Metroparks' New Howard Marsh 2:00 PM Oak Openings Preserve Registration Closed
  Enrich your knowledge of the natural and cultural history of our region through this weekly lecture series featuring an indoor presentation followed by an optional, short naturalist led hike. Denis Franklin, Metroparks Natural Resources Supervisor, will highlight our newest Metropark. Howard Marsh, located in Jerusalem Township is scheduled to open in the spring of 2018, just in time for the spring bird migration. Denis will discuss the property acquisition, the wetlands restoration and the park's amenities.

  This program is for selected volunteers. Recruitment will occur this fall and the classes will be held in the winter of 2018.

Prior to volunteering, all new volunteers are are encouraged to attend this orientation which enables the Volunteer Services staff to meet prospective volunteers, learn more about their interests,review park policies and procedures, and provide an overview of Metropark volunteer opportunities.

Orientations are held the first Tuesday of most months. [VMT]

  "The journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step." Local hiker Paul Fuzinski will share stories of his incredible 2015 Appalachian Trail "thru-hike" of 2200 miles. Whether you are a seasoned backpacker, a beginner or figuring out your next Metroparks Trail Challenge, you won't want to miss this kickoff to our 2018 backpacking program series.

  The soil of the Oak Opening region is dominated by sand. Learn about this important natural resource, taking some inspiration from the park and put it all together to create your own textured masterpiece. No art experience needed, just a willingness to try and have fun! All supplies included. Register all attendees.

  Do early winter sunset times have you lamenting the loss of your after work walk in the park? Enjoy an invigorating evening hike through your parks with a naturalist at a time when the parks are usually closed. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended and dress for the weather.
