  Calling all pioneers of all ages, the Johlin Black Swamp Cabin is open to enjoy. See how much life has changed in the last 150 years. Save yourself from the sweltering heat, cooking outdoors cannot be beat! Lend a hand while, the lady of the house cooks a meal over an open fire. Join us any time between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm, lend a hand with the cooking or just explore.  
8/6/17 Chaos Comes to Town: 1851 on the Canal 12:00 PM Providence No Registration Required
  View what life was like on the Miami and Erie Canal during its heyday. Families games and activities are sure to delight. Save some time to stop by the Isaac Ludwig Mill and Heritage Center. The Volunteer Canal boat will have a special 1851 themed runs at 12:30 pm, 2:00pm and 3:30pm. Fee applies to ride the canal boat; tickets can be purchased at the ticket booth the day of while available.  
8/20/17 Chiefs and Generals-Warriors,Scouts and Soldiers: All Ages 2:00 PM Fallen Timbers Battlefield Register
  Meet and talk to the people who fought the Battle of Fallen Timbers on the actual spot where it happened. In honor of the 223rd anniversary of the Battle of Fallen Timbers the Preservation Commission and the Metroparks are presenting a living history event at the Fallen Timbers Battlefield. Historical interpreters in period accurate uniforms and dress will be stationed along the trail to describe what happened there. Meet the people who made history.

Join us any time between 11:00 am and 3;00 pm, lend a hand with the open house activity or just explore. Thus Saturday Dip candles for the long winter nights to come.

 
9/8/17 Preschool Pioneers: Churn, Butter Churn (3 to 5 year olds) 10:00 AM Pearson Register
  Bring your 3 to 5 year old to the little cabin in the big swamp to learn how to make butter. Little pioneers will explore the Time Traveler's Trunk, hear a story, and make butter, and have and enjoy the outcome of their efforts. Register child only.  
9/15/17 A Canal Kind of Day – The Musical 6:30 PM Providence Register
  The Miami and Erie Canal was an important part of the history of Northwest Ohio. In this program, the Canal Boat Crew and other Metroparks interpreters will present a lighthearted, musical look at life as a canaller on the Miami and Erie Canal.

  From Native American fur trade, to the floating superhighways of the 1850's to the rumbling of the steam locomotive Toledo as a transportation hub has influenced commerce growth both regionally and nationally. You're invited to the Isaac Ludwig Mill to view Toledo's history story

  The Johlin Cabin turns 150 this year, so we are celebrating today. Come join us anytime between 11:00-3:00 for birthday fun, history, crafts, and games or just explore the cabin itself on this day where we celebrate our Great Black Swamp heritage.  
10/8/17 Applebutter Festival 12:00 PM Providence No Registration Required
  Escape the crowds at the Applebutter Festival for an hour of peace and colors. Board "The Volunteer" canal boat and journey along the vividly colored banks of the Miami and Erie Canal. Call 419-407-9741 for reservations if you are bringing a group of 10 or more. Save some time to visit the historic Isaac Ludwig Mill and Heritage Center.  
10/13/17 Preschool Pioneers: Apple Season (3 to 5 years olds) 10:00 AM Pearson Register
  Bring your 3 to 5 year olds to the little cabin in the big swamp to learn about Ohio's own John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed. Children will hear a story, drink warm apple cider, and use apples to make a craft to take home. Please register child only.

  They’re baaaaaaack! The spooky Halloween tradition returns to the Canal Experience at Providence Metropark. Meet characters from long ago that dwell in the ghost town of Providence on this lantern lit evening walk through the region’s most unique historic park. This program is not recommended for children under 5.

  Bring your 3 to 5 year old to the little cabin in the big swamp to learn about how black swamp pioneers celebrated Thanksgiving. Children will hear a story about the Thanksgiving holiday and make a craft to take home. Please register child only.  
11/12/17 Holiday Open House 10:30 AM Providence No Registration Required
  Step back in time at the Isaac Ludwig Mill! Children's activities will include candle dipping, cookie making on our wood cook stove and ornament making. Looking for a unique holiday gift or have some baking to do? Pick up some of our stone ground products to take home.
